Shaikpet’s Malkam Cheruvu Floods After Heavy Rain
After heavy rain lashed the city on Thursday, Shaikpet’s Malkam Cheruvu filled up and inundated the area through Friday morning.

Hyderabad:After heavy rain lashed the city on Thursday, Shaikpet’s Malkam Cheruvu filled up and inundated the area through Friday morning. The lake has a full tank level of 51.3 acres. The arterial road in front of the lake also filled with rainwater contributing to the gridlock that spread to roads across the IT zone.
A HYDRAA official, speaking with Deccan Chronicle, explained: “The topography around the lake is hilly and is full of slopes which lead directly to the lake. After the cloudburst and more than 15 cm of rainfall crashed over West Hyderabad, all that rainwater made its way to Malkam Cheruvu, which quickly led to the lake filling up.”
“The lake does not have proper outlet points, and the excess water was getting displaced only through the natural weirs of the lake, which was very slow. Our DRF staffers had a difficult time in opening the outlet gates and letting the excess water out, which led to the roads and colonies nearby receiving heavy flooding of water”, the official said.
The water from the lake created waist-deep floods in the surrounding areas like Timber Lake Colony, Prashanth Hills and Radhenagar. HYDRAA's DRF personnel and monsoon emergency teams worked through the night and cleared the waterlogging by Friday morning.
HYDRAA commissioner A.V. Ranganath, along with Cyberabad police commissioner Avinash Mohanty and traffic jint commissioner Dr Gajarao Bhupal inspected the lake on Friday and directed authorities to create new sluice gates and outlet points as soon as rains subside.
Ranganath stated that water was stagnating at Biodiversity Park and at the entrance of Shaikpet flyover, and ordered officials to make arrangements to divert the inundated water into Malkam Cheruvu.
