Senior Citizen Duped in Coin Sale Scam via YouTube Advertisement
The police asked the public to stay vigilant against online scams, especially those promising large returns for everyday items like currency coins

Hyderabad: A 68-year-old resident of Darul Shifa in Hyderabad fell victim to a cyber-fraud after watching a deceptive advertisement on YouTube.
The ad falsely promised to purchase an Rs.20 coin for an astronomical sum of Rs.50 lakh. Tempted by the offer, the victim contacted the number provided in the video and was introduced to a man identifying himself as Raj Gyani. Claiming interest in buying the coin, the fraudster first asked for Rs.1,500 to create a file, followed by multiple other payments under various pretexts.
Trusting the process, the victim continued to transfer money and ultimately lost a total of Rs.1.46 lakh. The fraudster later demanded an additional Rs.1 lakh, at which point the victim realized he had been tricked by cyber criminals using phishing tactics to exploit vulnerable individuals.
In an advisory, the police asked the public to stay vigilant against online scams, especially those promising large returns for everyday items like currency coins. Never transfer money to unknown individuals without verification, and be skeptical of extraordinary offers circulating on social media or video platforms.
Cyber criminals often use emotional manipulation and fake identities to build trust. “Stay alert and protect yourself from digital scams. Your awareness is your first line of defense. Preserve all communication, including messages, call records, and transaction proofs,” the police said.
