Secunderabad Cantonment Board To Drop Colonial Vestiges From Roads, Bazaars

Hyderabad: Roads named after British military officers and colonial administrators in the Secunderabad Cantonment will soon be replaced by the names of Indian military heroes, national leaders and cultural icons. As part of the defence ministry’s initiative to replace colonial-era names across cantonment boards, the Secunderabad Cantonment Board (SCB) has approved the renaming of 21 roads and three bazaar areas at its board meeting.

SCB chief executive officer Arvind Kumar Dwivedi said the board had approved the proposals, and the process of removing old signboards and installing the new names would be completed within a month.

Among the major changes, Potnee Road will become Tarapore Marg after Param Vir Chakra awardee Lt Col A.B. Tarapore, Richardson Road will be renamed Unnikrishnan Marg after Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, Noble Road will become A.P.J. Abdul Kalam Marg, Lytton Road will be renamed Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Road and Bolton Road will become Atal Bihari Vajpayee Marg.

Other roads will honour Param Vir Chakra awardees and military personnel, including Company Quartermaster Havildar Abdul Hamid, Major Somnath Sharma, Lt Arun Khetarpal, Naik Jadunath Singh, Lt Col Dhan Singh Thapa and Capt. Guru Bachan Singh Salaria. Burton Road will be renamed Santosh Babu Marg in memory of Colonel B. Santosh Babu, who was killed in the Galwan Valley clash in 2020.

In the bazaar area, Hare Road will become Tarbund Temple Road, 108 Bazaar will be renamed Infantry Bazar, and RA Pensioners Lines will become Artillery Pensioners Line.

Apart from the renaming exercise, the board agenda included the consideration of budget estimates for 2026-27 and revised estimates for 2025-26, approval of the annual administration report and annual accounts, among others. The board also discussed a Detailed Project Report for a comprehensive underground sewerage upgrade and nala development works in the cantonment area.
