HYDERABAD: City police commissioner V.C. Sajjanar cautioned young women to beware of deadly online dating scams, citing posters offering “rent a boyfriend” packages with discounts such as “Suffering from loneliness? Want a handsome boy to drink coffee with and watch movies? That too with 50 per cent off.”
Sajjanar said behind these colourful advertisements on Instagram, Telegram and Facebook lies a major cyber fraud. “Fraudsters showcase attractive photos and offer packages — ₹499 for a coffee meet, ₹1,249 for a movie date, ₹1,499 for shopping escort, ₹1,999 for accompanying events or weddings, and ₹4,499 for a full‑day package. These are traps,” he warned.
Investigations by the IT cell found that the photos are AI‑generated or lifted from the internet. Victims are lured into direct messages, assured of privacy, and asked to pay booking amounts or deposits through QR codes. Once the money is transferred, the accounts are blocked.
Sajjanar cautioned that believing online conversations and meeting strangers directly exposes women to cheating and blackmail. Victims may be threatened using their own mobile numbers and personal photos shared during chats.
“Our cybercrime department has identified such fraudulent ads. Those responsible will not be spared. Police are here to protect our women and daughters, and stern action will be taken,” he said.
He urged parents to remain vigilant about their children’s social media activity. “What posts are they seeing? Who are they talking to? Who do they meet when they go out? Without proper monitoring, innocent children are at risk,” he added.
Sajjanar advised citizens not to be fooled by discount offers, not to chat or meet strangers, and never to pay advances.
