Saidani Ma Tomb Restored To Old Glory

The tomb, built in 1883 by Nawab Abdul Haq Diler Jungi in memory of his mother Saidani Ma Saheba, had fallen into disrepair after years of neglect. Its stucco had crumbled, while the bowli was in ruins with collapsed sections.

Hyderabad: The Saidani Ma Tomb and its adjoining bowli (well) at Tank Bund have been restored, with their intricate stucco, jali screens and lime plaster detailing once again reflecting Hyderabad’s Indo-Islamic heritage.

The tomb, built in 1883 by Nawab Abdul Haq Diler Jungi in memory of his mother Saidani Ma Saheba, had fallen into disrepair after years of neglect. Its stucco had crumbled, while the bowli was in ruins with collapsed sections. Restoration required excavation to a depth of nearly 30 feet and rebuilding from scratch.

Archival research and material studies were undertaken before conservation began. Craftsmen used traditional tools and lime mortar to preserve the monument’s original grandeur.

“The Saidani Ma Tomb and bowli have been conserved with funding from HMDA under the supervision of the department of heritage, Telangana,” said Ratish Nanda, CEO of Aga Khan Trust for Culture, India.
