GHMC deploys drones to fight mosquito-borne diseases
Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) is employing technology to combat mosquito borne diseases such as Dengue, Malaria and Chikungunya aiming to reduce and curb their spread across the city.
The entomology wing is implementing anti-larval and anti-adult mosquito operations across all zones and circles.
In the 4,846 identified colonies, water storage areas, ponds and pits are being treated with the release of Gambusia fish and oil balls to prevent mosquito breeding. Special attention is being given to low-lying areas, cellars and construction sites, with indoor pyrethrum space sprays and larval surveys being conducted diligently.
Additionally, one floating trash collector per zone is being utilised to remove water hyacinth and other debris, further curbing mosquito proliferation.
GHMC is using drones for spraying larvicides not only in water tanks but also in areas inaccessible to human intervention.
GHMC urged citizens to prevent water stagnation around their homes to support the prevention of dengue, malaria and chikungunya.
Anti-larval activities are being effectively monitored through geo-tagged tracking, with geo-tagged photographs ensuring accountability among field staff.
The GHMC officials on Thursday undertook a field inspection in the Rajendranagar Circle, covering Jalpally Lake and adjoining flood-prone localities.
GHMC commissioner R.V. Karnan examined the readiness of field staff, directed swift action to avert waterlogging, and stressed the importance of continuous monitoring of vulnerable points during spells of heavy rain.
He also emphasised the need for quick coordination with the Traffic Police and Disaster Response Force (DRF) teams to ensure public safety. The officials were instructed to remain on high alert and take prompt remedial measures to minimise inconvenience to citizens during the monsoon season.

Bihar firearms racket busted in Hyd
Hyderabad: Cherlapally police, along with the Malkajgiri special operations team (SOT), intercepted a suspect near Cherlapally Railway Station and seized three country-made weapons along with ten live 8 mm rounds.
Rachakonda commissioner G. Sudheer Babu said the firearms were brought from Bihar and were intended for sale to individuals in Hyderabad for criminal activities. The arrested person, identified as Shiv Kumar, a labourer from Pukatnagar Colony in Cherlapally, was earlier booked in an NDPS case. His brother-in-law, Krishna Paswan, 28, a resident of Bihar, is absconding.
According to police, Paswan operates an illegal weapon manufacturing unit in Bihar and supplied the seized arms to Shiv Kumar. While working in Gujarat, Kumar travelled to his native place for Raksha Bandhan earlier this month, during which the conspiracy was hatched. The two returned to Hyderabad after the festival to execute their plan.
The commissioner said all weapon licences in Rachakonda are being reviewed and those found unnecessary will be cancelled. “There is a dangerous trend of keeping guns as status symbols. We will not allow gun culture to take root,” he said.
He urged citizens to report illegal firearms in their areas, warning that possession without a valid licence is a serious offence under the Arms Act, punishable with imprisonment and fines. A special team has been formed to nab Paswan and dismantle the supply chain from Bihar.
