Hyderabad: There is a rise in the number of student suicides in India, particularly in Telangana and Andhra Pradesh. This is a cause for concern and requires attention. Between 2022 and 2025, these states have reported cases of student suicide, largely due to academic pressure.
In 2022, Telangana reported 543 student suicides, with 66 cases directly linked to exam failure. Andhra Pradesh reported 575 student suicides, including 232 girls, according to NCRB reports. While official reports for later years are unavailable, initial data indicates that in 2023, Andhra Pradesh reported 17 student suicides and Telangana reported nearly 10.
In 2024, Andhra Pradesh confirmed 6 student suicides. In Telangana, 7 students reportedly died by suicide within a span of 48 hours.
In 2025, at least four students died by suicide in Telangana following the release of intermediate exam results. Among them, a 15-year-old student in Hyderabad reportedly took his life due to fear of failure. In another case, an 18-year-old student from Keshampet died by suicide after failing two subjects. A 17-year-old boy died by suicide in Chanda Nagar on May 2, 2025. A first-year college student died at her home in Medak district on May 3, 2025.
In Andhra Pradesh, at least 8 student suicides were reported in 2025. One case involved a 17-year-old intermediate student who died by suicide at her home in the early hours of Friday.
These incidents point to the need for mental health support in schools and colleges. Many young people, often facing academic pressure, are ending their lives. This situation calls for immediate action.
