Revanth’s Juggernaut Rolls on in Telangana

Hyderabad: Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s juggernaut rolled on as the Congress bagged nearly 75 per cent of the municipalities and municipal corporations in the latest civic election results announced on Friday, reinforcing its political dominance in Telangana.
The mandate is being widely viewed as a reaffirmation of Revanth Reddy’s leadership since the 2023 Assembly elections. Under his leadership, the Congress has maintained an unbroken string of victories — beginning with 2023 Assembly polls and the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, followed by wins in the Secunderabad Cantonment and Jubilee Hills Assembly bypolls in 2024 and 2025, the gram panchayat elections in late 2025, and now the 2026 municipal polls. The latest triumph comes just months after the Congress government completed two years in office in December 2025.
In a major political shift, the Congress pushed the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to zero and also to the fourth position in municipal corporations and restricted the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to just two corporations, where it managed leads only in Karimnagar and Nizamabad. The results dealt a severe blow to several BRS and BJP MLAs and BJP MPs, with the Congress capturing municipalities in their respective constituencies.
A total of 52,17,413 voters — including 25,49,750 men, 26,67,025 women and 638 others — were eligible to vote. Around 75 per cent polling was recorded, reflecting robust public participation across urban local bodies.
The sweeping victory comes against the backdrop of the Chief Minister’s ambitious “Telangana Rising 2047” vision and the successful hosting of the Global Summit at Bharat Future City in December 2025. The summit aimed at positioning the state as a $1-trillion economy by 2034 and a $3-trillion economy by 2047. The high-profile football match featuring global icon Lionel Messi during the summit further elevated Hyderabad’s global profile.
Buoyed by the momentum, the Congress leadership has now shifted its focus to the 2026 Greater Hyderabad municipal elections, targeting victories in the newly-created corporations of GHMC, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri. The expansion of Greater Hyderabad up to the ORR limits, the creation of Bharat Future City between the ORR and RRR, and the rollout of the CURE, PURE and RARE development model appear to have struck a chord with the urban electorate, consolidating Congress’ ascendancy in Telangana’s political landscape.
