Revanth Asked To Keep His Promise To Tenant Farmers, Issue ID Cards

He said tenant farmers faced several problems due to what he called the “stubborn attitude” of then-Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao who refused to even recognise tenant farmers

HYDERABAD: The Telangana Kaulu Raithula Gurthimpu Sadhana Committee has once again urged the state government to fulfil its pre-election promise of issuing identity cards to tenant farmers. Several speakers, including Prof. Yogendra Yadav, speaking at a round table conference, stressed that time was running out for recognition of tenant cultivators and for their inclusion in government schemes.

The committee said that tenant farmers may not have any option other than launching a state-wide agitation if government did not begin cultivator registration immediately. Prof. Yadav said: “Fulfilling the promise made to tenant farmers is a moral responsibility of Congress government. I urge the Chief Minister to immediately keep the word he gave during the election campaign to tenant farmers in a letter he wrote to them.”

He said tenant farmers faced several problems due to what he called the “stubborn attitude” of then-Chief Minister K. Chandrashekar Rao who refused to even recognise tenant farmers. On September 13, 2023, Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy, then the TPCC president, wrote an open letter to Telangana's tenant farmers promising recognition. “But I am pained to hear that after nearly three years, tenant farmers remain in the same situation," Prof. Yadav said.

Friday’s meeting was attended among others by committee convener Prof. D. Narasimha Reddy, Prof. G. Haragopal, MLC Prof. Kodandaram, former IAS officer Akunuri Murali, Justice (retd) Chandra Kumar and Prof. Sukumar Narayan. The speakers pointed out how the OTP-based systems introduced in the state, for instance for purchase of fertilisers, was making it near impossible for tenant farmers to avail the facility as the OTPs went to the land owners’ phones.
