Residents Told to Test Groundwater Before Drinking

HMWS&SB said groundwater quality varies by location and parameters such as TDS, hardness, fluoride and nitrate may differ depending on geological and local conditions.

Hyderabad: The Hyderabad Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board (HMWS&SB), addressing a viral video, claims that groundwater samples tested in a recently circulated social media video and survey were not samples of treated tap water supplied through its network and asked residents to have it tested before consumption.

HMWS&SB said groundwater quality varies by location and parameters such as TDS, hardness, fluoride and nitrate may differ depending on geological and local conditions.

The board said it treats around 560 MGD of water daily and conducts about 5,500 quality tests every day from the source to consumer taps.

It also carries out chlorination at three stages and uses around 330 chlorination plants to maintain residual chlorine in the distribution network.

HMWS&SB said its Naanyatha app enables real-time monitoring of water quality, while 10 special teams use GIS technology to identify leaks and possible contamination points across the city.

HMWS&SB managing director K. Ashok Reddy said residents should prioritise treated drinking water and avoid wastage.

He said water quality is monitored at every stage and corrective measures are taken if any issue is detected.
