Residents March for JBS-Medchal Metro Corridor

Hyderabad: Demanding immediate implementation of the JBS‑Medchal Metro corridor, residents and activists walked from Jeedimetla to the Jubilee Bus Station Metro Hub on Sunday, urging the Centre and the Telangana government to expedite Hyderabad Metro Rail Phase‑II expansion.

The march, organised by the Medchal Metro Sadhana Samithi (MMSS) and supported by The Citizens Council, highlighted the urgent need to expand Hyderabad’s Metro Rail network in view of rapid urbanisation and growing traffic congestion.

Addressing participants, MMSS founder Sampath Reddy Mamidi said the movement would continue until work on the Medchal Metro corridor begins. “Our walk will continue until the first pillar of the Medchal Metro is erected,” he said.

Organisers said the JBS‑Medchal corridor and the Raidurgam‑Shamshabad International Airport Metro corridor are among the most critical projects to meet Hyderabad’s mobility needs. They said both corridors could serve lakhs of commuters, ease congestion, improve connectivity and support future growth.

They expressed concern that while the Raidurgam‑Shamshabad Airport Metro corridor has reportedly been shelved by the Telangana government, the JBS‑Medchal Metro project is still awaiting approval from the Government of India despite state recommendations. The delay, they said, has deprived commuters in North Hyderabad of a safe, efficient and environmentally sustainable transport system.

The Citizens Council said Hyderabad, despite being one of India’s fastest‑growing metropolitan cities and a major contributor to the national economy, has not received the Metro Rail expansion it deserves compared to several other cities.

The walk began at the Gandhi Statue in Jeedimetla and concluded at the JBS Metro Hub, with participants carrying placards and raising slogans in support of the long‑pending project.
