Request to postpone MLC polls on account of Shivaratri

The G.O. 317 joint action committee (JAC) has urged the Telangana deputy chief electoral officer (Dy CEO) Satyavani to postpone the upcoming Teachers' and Graduates' MLC elections by at least one day, as they are scheduled on Maha Shivaratri, a Hindu festival.

Hyderabad: The G.O.

In a formal petition, JAC state working president Nageshwar Rao and Secretary Sandeep wrote that Shivaratri is a day of fasting for Hindus, and many government staff involved in election duties, including teachers, revenue officials, and polling personnel, will find it difficult to carry out their responsibilities while observing religious practices.

The JAC also raised a broader demand regarding election duty assignments in future polls. They requested that persons with disabilities, pregnant women, lactating mothers, and employees set to retire within six months should not be assigned election duties. They pointed out that cancellation of duty allocations after assignments are made becomes a complex process and suggested that exemptions be considered while collecting employee data itself.
