Rat infestations have raised concern at hospitals and hostels in the erstwhile Warangal district after incidents involving a body and girl students.
The rat menace in hospitals and hostels in the erstwhile Warangal district has raised public concern following two incidents involving a body at a government hospital and girl students at a social welfare hostel.
Recently, rats reportedly gnawed at a body kept in the mortuary of the Vardhannapet government hospital, biting the area above the deceased’s eye.
While the Telangana Human Rights Commission took suo motu cognisance of the incident, hospital superintendent Dr B. Virin resigned from his post.
In another incident, 14 girl students were reportedly bitten by rats at the Social Welfare Girls’ Gurukul School in Palakurthi mandal of Jangaon district.
Former minister Errabelli Dayakar Rao visited the school to ascertain facts. The police and school staff prevented his entry to the hostel, following which he staged a protest there. He later met the warden and principal and expressed concern over their alleged failure to provide basic facilities to the students.
There are allegations that poor drainage, inadequate sanitation and improper waste management in hospitals and hostels are contributing to the rat menace.
