HYDERABAD: Doctors at Gandhi Hospital have successfully performed a rare and highly complex cardiac surgery on a 25-year-old woman suffering from Bardet-Biedl Syndrome (BBS), a genetic disorder that affects multiple organ systems.
The patient, Pallavi, a resident of Asifabad district, had been experiencing breathlessness and palpitations for 10 days. After consultations at several private hospitals, she was referred from MGM Hospital in Warangal to Gandhi Hospital for advanced care.
Medical evaluation confirmed Bardet-Biedl Syndrome along with associated conditions including polydactyly, red cone dystrophy (retinitis pigmentosa), central obesity, intellectual disability, and Type 1 diabetes.
Cardiac investigations revealed a significant defect — an ostium primum atrial septal defect (ASD) measuring 14.7 mm, along with severe mitral regurgitation (MR). Further examination showed a larger ASD of 2.5 cm × 2 cm and a cleft in the anterior mitral leaflet, said Dr Ravindra, Head of the Cardiothoracic and Pulmonary Surgery Department. Pallavi’s ejection fraction was assessed at 65 per cent.
The surgical team carried out a highly intricate procedure involving mitral valve anterior leaflet repair, pericardial annuloplasty, and closure of the ostium primum ASD. The operation was successful, said Gandhi Hospital superintendent Dr Vani, congratulating the medical team for their achievement.
