Ramanthapur Shuts Down For Electrocution Victims

The rally, initiated by local BJP leaders, saw participation cutting across political lines and passed off peacefully.

Hyderabad: All 68 colonies of Ramanthapur observed a bandh on Tuesday in solidarity with victims of Monday’s tragedy, when six people died of electrocution during a Sri Krishna Janamashtami procession. Three others remain under treatment.

Residents and youth held a two-hour rally, raising slogans of “amar hai” in memory of the deceased. Shops, schools, petrol pumps, wine shops, hotels and all commercial establishments were shut. With a population of around 5.5 lakh, Ramanthapur was left in shock as its local youth were among those who died when a makeshift chariot carrying a Lord Krishna idol came into contact with a live wire at RTC Colony in the early hours of Monday.

The rally, initiated by local BJP leaders, saw participation cutting across political lines and passed off peacefully.

Speaking at the gathering, division leader Vengala Santosh Gupta said, “All participants unanimously demand that the government announce an ex gratia of `50 lakh and a government job to the families of those who lost their lives. The government should also cover the treatment costs of the injured.” Later in the evening, local youth organised a candlelight march to pay tribute to the victims.
