Raj Bhavan Holds 100 Years Of Art Deco Architecture

Raj Bhavan was chosen as the preferred venue due to its Art Deco style, designed by architect Eric Marett and built in 1936.

Hyderabad:Raj Bhavan, in collaboration with the Architecture and Design Foundation, India, celebrated 100 years of Art Deco architecture at the Durbar Hall, Raj Bhavan, on Tuesday.

Raj Bhavan was chosen as the preferred venue due to its Art Deco style, designed by architect Eric Marett and built in 1936.

Governor Jishnu Dev Varma inaugurated the event by launching a special logo for the year-long celebrations. The symbol represents the grand staircase of the main house of the Governor’s residence.

Speaking on the occasion, the Governor appreciated the work done by the Architecture and Design Foundation and Abha Narain Lambah in documenting the details and significance of architectural styles. He emphasised the need to preserve and protect such buildings for posterity. “Architecture is a unique discipline — a culmination of arts and sciences — mentioned in our ancient texts as a combination of Gyan and Vigyan,” he noted.

The exhibition showcased detailed documentation of Art Deco architecture in many prominent private and public buildings across the city, including Raj Bhavan.

The keynote address was delivered by Mumbai-based architect Abha Narain Lambah, who emphasised the need to prepare and submit Telangana’s nomination for Golconda-Qutb Shahi Tombs and Charminar to be listed as World Heritage Sites.

Jayesh Ranjan, Special Chief Secretary, Telangana Youth Advancement, Tourism and Culture Department, and M. Dana Kishore, principal secretary to the Governor (FAC), along with members of the arts and cultural fraternity and owners of Art Deco-style buildings, attended the event.
