Rain Pounds Hyderabad, Snarls Traffic Across City

Hyderabad:Widespread rain swept the city on Tuesday, leaving several roads waterlogged and traffic crawling through the evening, even as parts of northern Telangana received heavier rainfall of up to 70.5 mm.

Telangana Development Planning Society (TGDPS) data from 8.30 am to 9 pm showed 50 mm of rainfall at MCH Colony, Musheerabad, the highest reading in the city. It classified the average rainfall across the Greater Hyderabad area at 23 mm, in the moderate category.

The rain translated into a difficult evening on the roads. Waterlogging was reported at several points and Hyderabad traffic police advised residents to avoid unnecessary travel as rain and peak-hour traffic slowed movement.

In Cyberabad, police alerts reported waterlogging at multiple locations, including near University of Hyderabad Gate No. 2 in Gachibowli, warning commuters of congestion.

The disruption followed a warning a day earlier from Cyberabad Traffic Police asking IT companies to stagger employee departures in anticipation of rain and evening congestion.

Across Telangana, the strongest rainfall was concentrated further north. Maqdumpur in Kamareddy recorded 70.5 mm, followed by Jukkal at 65 mm. Kamareddy recorded the highest district average at 25.2 mm, followed closely by Medchal-Malkajgiri at 24.4 mm and Hyderabad at 23.8 mm. The state average stood at 9.2 mm.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said heavy rain had occurred at isolated places in Medak, Mulugu and Jayashankar Bhupalpally districts. The rain was linked to a deep depression over north interior Odisha and Gangetic West Bengal, which was moving west-northwest towards Jharkhand and Chhattisgarh.

For Wednesday, IMD has issued a yellow warning for isolated heavy rain in Adilabad, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Nirmal, Nizamabad, Jagtial, Vikarabad, Sangareddy, Medak and Kamareddy. Strong surface winds of 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated places. Rainfall is expected at fewer places on Wednesday and become isolated from Thursday.

For Hyderabad, the next 24 hours are expected to remain partly cloudy, with light to moderate rain or thundershowers and gusty winds reaching 30-40 kmph in parts of the city. Temperatures are expected around 32°C and 24°C.

On Tuesday, the areas that received significant rainfall included Boudhanagar at 49.8 mm, Bansilalpet 46 mm, Dr MCR HRD Institute campus 41.5 mm and the area near Musheerabad police station at 41.3 mm.

Other significant readings included 40.3 mm at the Osmania University Registrar Office, 39.8 mm at Gymkhana, 39 mm at Rahmathnagar, 38 mm at Fatehnagar, 37.8 mm at Tukkuguda, 37 mm at PJR Stadium and 36.5 mm at Chandanagar.
