Psychotherapy For Women Inmates Announced

HYDERABAD: Director General of Prisons Dr Soumya Mishra announced that psychotherapy sessions would be conducted for the welfare of women serving sentences in prisons. She was speaking at an event to mark Gandhi Jayanti at Chanchalguda Jail. State‑level events were held at the Special Prison for Women within the Central Prison complex here.
Dr Gaurav Uppal, secretary, finance and planning; Dr B. Ravindra Naik, director of public health; and A. Sridevi of the Hyderabad District Legal Services Authority participated in the programme.
It was announced that psychotherapy sessions would be introduced at the Special Women’s Prison in Hyderabad to strengthen the mental well‑being and emotional resilience of female inmates. Inmates shared experiences of personal transformation resulting from counselling. One inmate, previously involved in the drug trade, said the sessions were helping her understand the impact of her actions on her family.
Dr Mishra also flagged off a new ambulance at the women’s prison. Procured with the support of the Sri VVS Kendra Welfare Trust, the vehicle will strengthen medical services and emergency assistance for inmates.
Prisons IG N. Murali Babu, DIG Dr D. Srinivas, superintendents N. Sivakumar Goud and T. Venkata Lakshmi Srinath, and deputy superintendents V. Sashikanth, S. Vijay Kumar and B. Amaravathi were present.
