Professional Probes Lift Conviction Rate In Nalgonda

Nalgonda: Convictions in criminal cases in Nalgonda district more than doubled in 2025 compared to 2024, reflecting improved investigation and prosecution that ensured offenders did not escape punishment. According to the Annual Achievements-2025 report released by police superintendent Sharath Chandra Pawar, the number of convictions rose to 132 in 2025 from 65 in 2024, registering a 103 per cent increase.

In 2025, courts awarded death sentences to two convicts. Life imprisonment was awarded to 10 accused, compared to 11 in 2024. Imprisonment sentences increased significantly across categories: 14 convicts received prison terms in 2025 compared to one in 2024; eight received sentences of seven to 14 years compared to two last year; 24 were sentenced to one to seven years compared to 14; and sentences of up to one year were awarded to 71 persons compared to 28 in 2024.
Another major achievement was road safety. Accident-prone black spots were reduced to 30 from 41 within a year. Road accidents declined marginally to 897 in 2025 from 907 in 2024. Fatal accidents dropped to 323 from 366, while deaths due to road accidents fell to 343 from 390. Grave crimes declined sharply to 169 cases in 2025 from 221 in 2024. Non-grave crimes also reduced to 8,324 from 8,613.
Crimes against women in Nalgonda district recorded a marginal increase in 2025, with 703 cases compared to 684 in 2024. Dowry murder cases remained nil in both years, while dowry deaths rose from one to two. Abetment to suicide cases remained unchanged at 10.
Harassment cases increased from 313 to 346, forming the largest share of crimes against women. Women murder cases rose slightly from nine to 11. Rape cases declined from 101 in 2024 to 87 in 2025. Kidnapping cases increased marginally from 26 to 27, while molestation cases dropped from 216 to 196.
Cases registered under the Pocso Act declined slightly from 121 in 2024 to 117 in 2025, indicating sustained monitoring and timely intervention in crimes against children.
SP Sharath Chandra Pawar said the reduction of accident-prone black spots from 41 to 30 within a year gave him particular satisfaction.
