Hyderabad: Head of the department of sociology at the University of Hyderabad (UoH) Prof. Nagaraju Gundemeda has been appointed to the working group on “Quality of School Education” formed by the Telangana Education Commission (TEC). The group has been tasked with identifying gaps in school education and recommending reforms within 45 days.

Known for his work in the sociology of education, Prof Gundemeda has researched issues such as teacher agency, gender gaps in schooling, discriminatory practices, and the social context of learning. His appointment to the group recognises his academic contribution to understanding how school systems shape learning outcomes and student experiences.

The Telangana Education Commission is currently drafting a broad policy roadmap for the state’s education sector. As part of this, it has formed several working groups focused on different areas. Prof Gundemeda joins a team that includes prominent academics such as Prof Shanta Sinha (retired faculty, UoH), Prof Rekha Pappu (TISS-Hyderabad) and B. Seshu Kumari (former SCERT director), all of whom have past associations with the UoH. The group is expected to submit its findings and suggestions to the TEC in the coming weeks.
