Pregnant Sambar Deer Dies After Being Caught in Poachers Trap
The foetus also died.
NALGONDA: A pregnant sambar deer died after being caught in a trap allegedly laid by poachers in a forest area near Palvancha in Bhadradri-Kothagudem district.
Acting on information from locals that a deer had been caught in a trap and suffered severe injuries, forest officials reached the spot, removed the trap and shifted the animal to the veterinary hospital in Palvancha for treatment.
Veterinary doctor Indu Teja found that the animal was a pregnant female sambar deer with blood injuries and began treatment. When the deer did not respond, he attempted to save the foetus, but the animal died before delivering its calf. The foetus also died.
Dr Teja said the deer was around eight months pregnant, while the gestation period of a female sambar deer was about eight months. He said the carcasses of the deer and the calf were handed over to forest officials after postmortem examination. Forest officials have registered a case and are making efforts to identify those who allegedly laid the trap.
Meanwhile, locals alleged that the delay in providing treatment to the severely injured deer may also have contributed to its death. They said the doctor was not present when forest officials brought the animal to the veterinary hospital and arrived after being contacted over the phone.
