Power Expo Traces 120 Years Of Hyderabad’s Electricity
TGSPDCL’s Power Exhibition–2026 showcases Hyderabad’s 120-year electricity journey, from the Nizam-era power system to today’s smart grids and digital distribution.
The Telangana Southern Power Distribution Company Limited (TGSPDCL) is showcasing 120 years of Hyderabad’s electricity history to the public through its Power Exhibition–2026, that will end at People’s Plaza on Necklace Road on Monday. Organised to create awareness about power consumption, safety standards, technological advancements and the evolution of the power sector, the event features 16 thematic stalls covering diverse aspects of power distribution.
A dedicated gallery presents the 120‑year historical journey of Hyderabad’s power system, tracing its evolution from the Nizam era to today’s digital, smart grid‑based distribution network through photographs, models, historical documents and informational displays. The timeline begins with the inception of electricity supply in October 1910 through the Hyderabad State Electricity Department using diesel generators for limited household and street lighting.
The exhibition highlights key milestones including the establishment of Hussainsagar Thermal Power Station in 1920 during the reign of the 7th Nizam Mir Osman Ali Khan, the formation of Andhra Pradesh State Electricity Board (APSEB) in 1959, power sector reforms in 1998, and the creation of TGSPDCL following Telangana’s formation on June 2, 2014.
K. Srikanth, an electrical engineering student of Osmania University, said the smart grid and SCADA technology demonstrations were particularly enlightening. “As an engineering student, I’ve studied these concepts theoretically, but seeing the actual working models and understanding how Hyderabad’s power distribution has evolved from basic diesel generators to advanced digital systems is fascinating,” he observed.
Sunita Reddy, a government school teacher from Banjara Hills, expressed appreciation for the educational value of the exhibition. “I brought my two children here to help them understand where electricity comes from and why we must use it safely and wisely,” she said.
TGSPDCL chairman and managing director Jitesh V. Patil said the exhibition aims to provide the public with a comprehensive understanding of power history, consumption, safety and future technologies. He noted that TGSPDCL is moving towards a modern power future while continuing its historical legacy, currently serving millions of consumers across 15 districts in southern Telangana with quality 24x7 power supply.
