Power Demand On The Rise In GHMC’s Urban Circles
Usage is expected to cross 5,000 MW this year as against 4,352 MW last year

Hyderabad:With soaring temperatures in Hyderabad, power utility TGSPDCL is bracing up to meet the rising electricity demand in the urban GHMC areas. It plans to meet the rising demand, with an increased focus on infrastructure development.
The power utility expects the power demand during the summer will surpass 5,000 MW, compared to the peak power demand of 4,352 MW recorded on May 6 last year, reflecting a growth of approximately 15.87 per cent year-on-year.
The power demand had already reached 4,136 MW on April 23 this year, with a power consumption of 88.25 million units, compared to 3,745 MW on the same day last year, which saw 79.84 million units consumed. On April 24, the power demand registered 4,170 MW by 4 pm alone, compared to 3,747 MW on the same day last year.
The electricity demand within the GHMC is growing rapidly, with an annual increase exceeding 30 per cent in some areas. The Cyber City circle, which covers the Gachibowli, Ibrahimbagh, and Kondapur divisions, recorded a 31.75 per cent increase in power demand last year. The Banjara Hills circle saw a 22.62 per cent increase, and the Medchal circle, which includes Medchal, Kukatpally, and Jeedimetla divisions, registered a 20.24 per cent increase in power demand last year.
To handle the increased power demand and ensure a quality power supply, TGSPDCL has upgraded the distribution transformer network. This includes the installation of additional Power Transformers and Distribution Transformers (DTRs), following directions from Deputy Chief Minister Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka.
New feeders have been added at 33/11 kV and LT levels, and 11 kV feeders are being monitored through a Feeder Outage Management System, which covers over 5,000 feeders to ensure a quality power supply and a quick response to outages.
Despite challenges such as natural calamities, such as gales, winds, heavy rains, TGSPDCL has demonstrated prompt restoration capabilities. Even when power was disrupted in 350 feeders, the company managed to rectify these outages in the shortest possible time, thanks to the efforts of senior staff who responded swiftly during critical periods.
TGSPDCL chairman and managing director Musharraf Ali Faruqui is focusing on line clearance protocols and close coordination between Transco and Discom engineers to maintain safety during maintenance works. Preventive maintenance and timely completion of repair tasks are prioritised to minimise disruptions during peak demand. Advanced monitoring systems are in place to track feeder performance and load fluctuations in real time, enabling faster responses to outages and improved load management.
With the real-time monitoring and rapid outage restoration, Musharraf Ali Faruqui said that he is confident of ensuring an uninterrupted, quality power supply during the high-demand summer months in Hyderabad.
