Power Cuts Disrupt Dasara Festivities In Warangal

High temperatures and humidity add to discomfort as electricity demand remains high; 547.97 million units consumed in six days

WARANGAL: Frequent power cuts are disrupting Dasara festivities in Warangal, causing inconvenience to households hosting relatives and preparing traditional delicacies. High temperatures and humidity are adding to the discomfort, with interruptions in electricity supply affecting domestic consumers during the festival.

While power interruptions in rural areas are affecting agricultural activities, urban consumers are concerned about the reliability of supply. With relatives returning to their native places for Dasara, crowded homes are facing additional discomfort when air-conditioners and fans stop working. Children, elderly people and women working in kitchens are among those affected.

Rising temperatures, humidity and increased use of air-conditioners, coolers and fans have added to concerns over domestic electricity demand. However, El Nino alone cannot be identified as the cause of power cuts, as interruptions can also result from supply constraints, demand fluctuations and local technical issues.

Consumers are seeking uninterrupted power supply during the festive season and want the electricity department to ensure reliable service while meeting the requirements of the agricultural sector. They say power interruptions are affecting time spent with relatives who have returned home for the celebrations.

Statistics released by the Telangana Northern Power Distribution Company Limited (TG NPDCL) show that 547.97 million units of electricity were consumed between October 11 and 16. Daily consumption ranged from 88.94 million to 94.56 million units during the six-day period.

Peak power demand stood at 6,708 MW on October 11, 6,655 MW on October 12, 6,567 MW on October 13 and 6,448 MW on October 14. It rose to 6,690 MW on October 15 before reaching 6,622 MW on October 16. The highest daily consumption during the period was recorded on October 11, at 94.56 million units.

Electricity demand also remained substantial in the erstwhile Warangal region. The Hanamkonda electricity circle recorded a peak demand of 382.85 MW on October 16, while the Warangal circle registered 334.72 MW on the same day.

The demand and consumption figures, however, do not establish the extent of power cuts. Information on the timing and duration of local interruptions would be needed to assess their impact. Consumers have urged officials to address supply-related problems and minimise disruptions during the festive season.
