Hyderabad: A post-wedding ritual turned tragic for the family members of the bridegroom in Parigi as four persons were killed in a road accident on Monday midnight. At least 20 people suffered injuries and of them the condition of half a dozen people is critical, according to police

More than 25 people came to attend ‘vadi biyyam’ ritual, which was performed for the newly married couples by their parents, to bless their future children and ensure their well-being at the bride’s house. The ceremony involves offering new clothes, flowers, rice laced with turmeric powder and coconut, symbolizing blessings and protection.

As per customs, the bridegroom’s family came to the bride’s house in Parigi in a private travel bus to attend ‘vadi biyyam’ ritual. They had dinner and were waiting to board the bus when they came to know that the vehicle developed a snag.

Left with no other option, the guests slept at the bride’s house. Even as they were in a deep sleep, bus driver Mohammed Yousuf informed them that another vehicle was arranged for them to drop at the bridegroom's residence in Chandanavelli, Parigi Sub-Inspector M Santosh said.

Around 1.30 am on Tuesday, the guests boarded the bus and when they were about to reach Chandanavelli in Shahbad mandal in 10 minutes, Yousuf rammed the bus into a moving lorry at Rangapur village in Parigi mandal from behind resulting in the death of four persons identified as Muthyala Mallesh of Seetarampuram in Shahbad, Balamani of Chandanavelli, Ashwini of Chevella and M Sandeep of Kishannagar.
