Hyderabad: The Indian Institute of Technology-Hyderabad (IIT-H) campus now hosts a redesigned, technology-enabled post office, with India Post launching a next-generation sub-post office aimed at digital and student needs. The upgraded facility was inaugurated on Monday by the Telangana Circle of India Post as part of efforts to modernise postal services on university campuses and test new service models for younger users.
The post office, which has been operating on the campus since July 2021, has been revamped to include digital payment options, smart service counters, Wi-Fi connectivity, and a refreshed interior designed with inputs from IIT-H’s design department.
A notable addition is the use of Digipin, a geospatial digital address system jointly developed by IIT-H, the department of posts, and the National Remote Sensing Centre. The system enables precise location-based addressing and is expected to improve mail delivery and last-mile services within large campuses and dense urban spaces.
Chief postmaster general, Telangana Circle, Veena Kumari Dermal said the initiative marks a shift in how post offices were being repositioned. “We want post offices to be spaces that people, especially young users, find relevant for daily needs and digital services, not just for traditional mail,” she said.
IIT-H director B. S. Murty noted that the campus had earlier contributed to the development of Digipin. “This demonstrates how ideas developed in a university setting can translate into practical civic use,” he said.
