Poorly-Installed and Subpar LEDs Pose Risk to People, Say Experts

Hyderabad: LED lighting has become one of the most-sought after decorative items during festivals and celebratory events. Experts have warned that improper installation or low-quality LEDs, especially strip lights, can lead to overheating and potential fire hazards.
Yera Janak Raj of Sri Durga Decorative Lights and Sound said, “In many cases electricians do not install them properly. While connecting the lights, they often fail to install an MCB, a miniature circuit breaker that acts like an automatic switch, between strips. As electricity is drawn directly from the electric poles for most public events, the lack of MCB could lead to several issues.”
Several people have complained against the use of LEDs, as the harsh glare disturbs them while passing by. Some LED lights also exhibit flicker, which can cause eye strain and headaches.
Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Dr A. Gopal Sharma, faculty member of electrical, electronics and communications department at an engineering college, said, “LEDs generate heat. Every component has a heat sink, which dissipates heat into the atmosphere to protect the circuit board.”
“Problems arise when the LEDs are of poor quality or improperly installed. When such lights fail, flickering begins, which can sometimes cause short circuits or sparks on the board, leading to fire accidents.”
Janak Raj said most decorative lights, especially in commercial areas, are procured from the Delhi market. These are low in quality, lack certification, and often fail when overused.
Experts advise ensuring proper wiring, secure mounting, and adequate insulation, especially for strip lights.
