Poor Patchwork Leaves Hyderabad Roads Full of Potholes Again

Hyderabad: The recent rain has left several roads riddled with potholes, causing trouble for both motorists and pedestrians. Residents said that the patchwork repairs carried out by municipal officials was poorly done and has already broken apart, leaving the roads in an even worse condition.

Many stretches now have large potholes filled with rainwater, making it difficult for drivers to judge their depth. Two-wheeler riders are among the worst affected, as several have reportedly lost balance after hitting hidden potholes.

Residents said repeated patchwork without proper road restoration has become a regular issue. They claimed that newly repaired stretches often develop potholes again after a few spells of rain, raising concerns about the quality of the work.

Bhavani said of the roads in KPHB Colony: “There are big potholes and pits on every road and street, both on the main road and within colony streets. We complained to the municipal authorities, but nothing came about it. How long will the authorities wait to fill the potholes?”

Frustrated by the lack of lasting repairs, residents in some neighbourhoods have started filling the potholes themselves using soil, sand and gravel to reduce the risk of accidents.

Ramesh, a shopkeeper at Himayatnagar, said "Vehicles were constantly falling into the potholes every day, and during the rains, they could not realise how deep the potholes were. So we collected soil and sand and filled them ourselves to make the road a little safer."

Another resident, S. Lakshmi, said the temporary solution has created a different problem. "When it rains, the sand and gravel spreads across the road and becomes slippery. Two-wheelers skid very easily, and the mud also splashes onto pedestrians and nearby shops. It is not a proper solution, but we had no other choice," she said.

Locals have urged the civic authorities to take up permanent road repairs instead of temporary patchwork.
