Plastic Waste Chokes Drains in Karimnagar

Civic authorities said intensified cleaning measures would be taken to prevent flooding in vulnerable localities.

Adilabad:Large quantities of plastic waste choking drainage lines have raised concerns in Karimnagar during the ongoing monsoon.

Sanitation workers of the Karimnagar Municipal Corporation found a significant accumulation of plastic bottles and other materials while cleaning drains in Jyotinagar. A video showing heaps of plastic waste being cleared from the drains circulated on social media, drawing public attention.

Following complaints about blocked drains at Jagtial Road and near Shiva Talkies, mayor Kolagani Srinivas directed officials to take up immediate cleaning works. He instructed executive engineer Lachi Reddy to deploy additional workers to clear major drainage channels ahead of heavy rains.

Officials said several drains were clogged with plastic bottles, thermocol sheets, glass and other waste, obstructing the free flow of water. The blockages have led to overflow of drains and water entering residential areas during rains.
