PIL accuses HMRL of promoting illegal betting apps

The petitioner sought to restrain HMRL from continuing such promotions, enforce accountability on its leadership

HYDERABAD: A PIL has been filed before the Telangana High Court against the Hyderabad Metro Rail and the state-owned Hyderabad Metro Rail Limited (HMRL), for alleged promotion of illegal offshore betting apps 1x BAT (surrogate for 1xBET), Fairplay and Myjackpot 777.

Petitioner Nagubabu, an advocate, filed the PIL complaining that the advertisements of these firms, displayed on metro trains and stations, violated the Telangana Gaming Act 1974, the Information Technology Act and other laws.

The petitioner sought to restrain HMRL from continuing such promotions, enforce accountability on its leadership and to direct the enforcement directorate (ED) to investigate the potential money laundering links under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act. The petitioner submitted that the Telangana police had booked around 35 celebrities for similar promotions but HMRL had been left out.

The union ministry of information and broadcasting, electronics and information technology, CBI, ED, DGP, HMRL, Chief Secretary, HMRL’s MD and GHMC commissioner were named as respondents in the PIL.
