People Elated Over Nalgonda Upgrading As Municipal Corporation

After conversion into a municipal corporation, Nalgonda would be considered a city instead of a town. It would also have a mayor in place of a municipal chairman, and corporators would come in place of councillors: Report

NALGONDA: The decks have been cleared for Nalgonda to get the status of a municipal corporation, with a Bill for the purpose being introduced in the Assembly on Tuesday. The Nalgonda municipality spreads over 105 square km and has a population of more than three lakh, which fulfils the criteria to declare the town as a municipal corporation.

After conversion into a municipal corporation, Nalgonda would be considered a city instead of a town. It would also have a mayor in place of a municipal chairman, and corporators would come in place of councillors. These are the administrative changes that would take place after Nalgonda is changed into a municipal corporation. The status would also help Nalgonda get more funds from the Centre and the state government for development.

The Nalgonda civic body was set up in 1941 as a grade-III municipality and upgraded to a grade-I municipality in 1955. Presently, the number of wards in Nalgonda municipality is 48. As per the rules, another two wards need to be created in Nalgonda after it becomes a municipal corporation.

According to sources in the district administration, 10 per cent of the population could be increased or decreased as per the requirement for the reorganisation of wards. There should be a minimum of 50 divisions in the municipal corporation.

With the creation of Nalgonda Municipal Corporation, the government employees working in Nalgonda would get a higher House Rent Allowance (HRA) and City Compensatory Allowance.

Former Nalgonda municipal vice chairman Abbhagoni Ramesh said that upgrading Nalgonda into a municipal corporation would boost development and bring in more infrastructure. The women of urban SHGs in Nalgonda would also get a higher amount of loans. The land values in Nalgonda would also go up in view of the upgradation of Nalgonda as a municipal corporation.

The members of the Congress also conducted celebrations at the Clock Tower centre in Nalgonda.

Though welcoming the decision of the state government, BRS Nalgonda town president Bhongir Devender said that merely upgrading Nalgonda into a municipal corporation would not benefit the people. The facilities and infrastructure should be developed in Nalgonda to improve living conditions.
