Flood-hit being given relief, state tells HC

Hyderabad: The government on Thursday informed the High Court that relief efforts are underway for the people hit by the recent floods, including provision of temporary shelters, safe drinking water, and nutritious food.

The court on Thursday was hearing public interest litigation filed in 2020 by Dr Cheruku Sudhakar of Nalgonda and Kabbaka Shravan Kumar from Mulugu, who alleged that at that time the government had failed to provide adequate support to affected citizens. Chikkudu Prabhakar, counsel for the petitioners, while citing the recent floods in Warangal , Medak, Kamareddy districts, argued that farmers and residents across several districts had been left vulnerable. He urged the bench to direct the government to strictly enforce the minimum standards of relief prescribed under the National Disaster Management framework.

Government’s counsel responded stating that food, water, and shelter were being provided as per the court’s earlier directions. A compilation of reports and orders had been prepared for submission to all stakeholders.

A division bench comprising Chief Justice Aparesh Kumar Singh and Justice G.M. Mohiuddin directed the government to file a detailed reply and adjourned the matter to September 9.
