Panel Seeks Action in Kukatpally Toddy Deaths

The Commission was urged to direct the excise department to inspect all toddy outlets across Telangana.

Hyderabad: The Telangana State Human Rights Commission has taken suo motu cognisance of the deaths and hospitalisations caused by adulterated toddy in Kukatpally and KPHB. The complaint, filed by Rama Rao of Maredpally, listed 15 victims, including four confirmed deaths — Tulasi Ram, 47, Bojjah, 55, Narayanamma of HMT Hills, and Sita Ram of Vanaparthy district.

The incident occurred at the HMT Nagar toddy compound on Wednesday. The complaint alleges the toddy was laced with alprazolam, hydrochloride and diazepam. The Commission was urged to direct the excise department to inspect all toddy outlets across Telangana. The complaint also sought Rs.10 lakh compensation for each death and Rs.5 lakh for each person injured or left disabled.

The petitioner demanded registration of criminal cases under Sections 106 and 123 of the BNS and immediate closure of all outlets involved in the sale of spurious toddy.
