Hyderabad:Over 1,000 musicians from across Telangana will come together at LB Indoor Stadium in Basheerbagh on May 4 at 10.30 am, to celebrate the 258th birth anniversary of Sri Thyagaraja Swamy. The announcement was made by Telangana Sangeetha Nataka Akademi chairperson Prof Dr Alekhya Punjala during a press meet on Friday at Kalabhavan.
She said the event was being held in response to Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy’s call to promote art across the state. “This year, Hyderabad’s Thyagaraja Jayanti celebrations will match the scale of those held in Thanjavur, where the saint composer is revered. Musicians, both seasoned and young, are expected to take part in the Tyagayya Gana Goshti,” added Dr Punjala.
Ministers Mallu Bhatti Vikramarka, Jupally Krishna Rao, Uttam Kumar Reddy, Duddilla Sridhar Babu, Ponnam Prabhakar and Kodad MLA N. Padmavathi will be attending the event. Several Padma Shri awardees, including Dr Shobharaju, Dr Yella Venkateswara Rao, Dr Haripriya from the Hyderabad Sisters, Dr Kovala Shanta and Prema Ramamoorthy, will also be present. Dr Punjala said their participation will inspire younger artistes.
She recalled how the Akademi had earlier organised Jayanti celebrations for Bhakta Ramadasu and Nataraja Ramakrishna that brought in large crowds. “Thyagaraja’s service to Carnatic music is infinite,” she said, adding, “The event was being organised to preserve and foreground devotional traditions.”
Names of musicians have already been registered, though others interested are free to join on the day itself. The Akademi is also preparing for another cultural event during the Kaleshwaram Pushkarams, where 24 teams will perform over 10 days starting May 15.
