OU Students Protest Over Unsafe Hostel
Students of Osmania University’s E1 hostel protested after a ceiling section and fan fell in a room, injuring a student and raising safety concerns.

Inmates of Osmania University’s E1 hostel staged a protest after a portion of the cardboard ceiling and a ceiling fan fell on a student in Room No.53, leaving him injured. The incident occurred on Sunday when two students were resting. A section of the ceiling collapsed, causing minor head injuries, followed by the fan crashing down. Students demanded immediate relocation to another hostel.
An eyewitness told Deccan Chronicle: “By God’s grace we escaped safely. The hostel has been in the same condition for five years. It’s high time the university shifted us.” Another law student said the building, a Nizam‑era horse stable later converted into a hostel, is in a dilapidated state. “Every monsoon, waterlogging leaves us at risk of shocks from damp switchboards,” he said.
Cardboard sheets cover roofs in several rooms, while students complain of lack of drinking water and poor washroom facilities. “We have to fetch water during municipal supply hours or from other hostels,” one student said. Students said repeated representations to the university have gone unanswered. “We asked to be shifted to C hostel, which is vacant. The VC assured us six months ago but nothing has happened,” they said.
They added similar incidents had occurred in previous batches. “We are scared to stay here. The injured student is from a remote village and has not even informed his family,” one student said.
