Osmania University’s Geography Department Introduces Drone-Based Training for Students

“We are working to ensure students understand how these tools are used in real situations,” she said.

Hyderabad:The department of geography at Osmania University introduced drone-based training and field technologies, aiming to give students practical exposure in geosciences. Officials told this newspaper that the department was using a DGCA-certified drone as part of its curriculum, along with tools such as differential global positioning system (DGPS) and total station instruments for land surveys, mapping and terrain analysis.

The department recently conducted a workshop on drone technology in geosciences. Department head Prof. T. Anuradha said the focus was on combining classroom learning with field-based skills. “We are working to ensure students understand how these tools are used in real situations,” she said.

Faculty said students are also being trained in Geographical Information Systems (GIS) and remote sensing software, which are widely used in government and private sector projects. The department has been involved in geospatial research for several years, with support from agencies such as the University Grants Commission and the Union department of science and technology.

The university said the aim is to prepare students for work in areas such as urban planning, environmental studies and disaster management.
