Hyderabad: Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls must not result in citizens losing their constitutional right to vote, speakers at a round table at Osmania University said, as they discussed the revision process and the need to protect electoral and constitutional rights.

The discussion, titled ‘The Constitutional Right to Vote and SIR in India’, took place at the New Seminar Hall of Arts College under the theme ‘Safeguarding the Constitution and its rights: Contemporary Election Commission of India issues and challenges’.

Manchala Kiran Kumar, PhD scholar in Public Administration, SRF scholar and SFI vice president at Osmania University, presided over the meeting.

Participants discussed how SIR could affect citizens’ voting rights and what measures were required to protect those rights and the Constitution.

The discussion also covered contemporary issues and challenges concerning the Election Commission of India.

Professors, students and youth representatives from SFI, DYFI, AISF, PDSU, BRSV and other student organisations also took part, along with research scholars and postgraduate and law students.

Organisers announced that a state conference on the same subject would take place on October 30 in Room No. 57, Arts College, Osmania University.

They invited students, scholars, teachers and members of civil society to attend the conference, which will continue discussions on constitutional rights and the right to vote.
