None Of Five Depression Weather Systems Over BoB Brought Any Rain for TG

Hyderabad:Five depression weather systems over the Bay of Bengal so far. And a sixth is in the process of forming. But the latest one too, as four of the five previous ones did, is not expected to bring any rain for Telangana which so far this month has notched up 37 per cent deficit. The overall monsoon deficit for the state stood at 17 per cent per cent.

All the depressions so far have formed over the northwest Bay, to the south of West Bengal. Typically, they move in a northwesterly direction but the one in July last week ploughed a different path and moved over Chhattisgarh and Maharashtra bringing much needed rains to the state. Where exactly a depression forms depends on various factors such as sea water temperatures, wind patterns and currents. There is now an upper air circulation more or less in the same area where the previous ones formed and it is expected that it will develop into a depression in a day or two.

“It is as yet uncertain which way the latest one that is still forming will go,” said Dr GNRS Srinivas, a senior meteorologist from the India Meteorological Department.

The unpredictable nature of the monsoon this year, thanks to the El Nino that is slowly gaining in strength and is expected to peak in December, laid to rest hopes of a more than normal rain for Telangana this August with a 37 per cent deficit already, which the IMD had earlier forecast as a likely possibility.

Going into September, the expectation was that the month would be drier than August. “Unless a system develops over the Bay of Bengal closer to Andhra Pradesh coast in the West Central Bay, the current trend of less rains is expected to continue in September. But a better picture will emerge on how things are shaping up for the next month when the IMD will issue a fresh forecast towards the end of August,” he said.
