Adilabad: In the wake of last year’s flooding, Nirmal district officials are taking steps to prevent flooding in Nirmal town during the monsoon.
Acting on the instructions of district collector Abhilasha Abhinav, irrigation officials lowered the height of the check dam built across Swarna Vagu, which had posed a flood risk to the colony during monsoon. The Swarna Vagu eventually merges with the Godavari River at Madapur.
Officials observed that excess floodwater was flowing into the check dam, which was already at full capacity, causing the overflow to inundate the downstream colony.
A few days ago, irrigation officials strategically blasted sections of the dam to lower its height, allowing water to flow downstream smoothly and prevent potential flooding — well ahead of the onset of the monsoon.
Residents of GNR Colony had endured severe hardships last year when floodwaters entered their homes during heavy rains. The District Disaster Response Force (DDRF) later carried out rescue operations to evacuate those stranded by the flooding in Nirmal town.
It is reported that a total of 13 check dams have been constructed along the Swarna Vagu to facilitate water storage and enhance groundwater recharge in the region.
