Nirmal Cops Launch Women’s Commando Unit
Shivangi, with 16 handpicked women officers, completed a 45-day training in explosives, live firing, navigation, surveillance, and anti-insurgency tactics

Adilabad: The Nirmal police department on Saturday inaugurated “Shivangi”, a specialised women’s commando unit trained in advanced weaponry and jungle warfare, at a ceremony graced by rural development minister Danasari Anasuya Seethakka.
Comprising 16 handpicked women officers, Shivangi underwent an intensive 45-day training regimen covering explosives handling, live firing, field signalling, map reading, unmapped navigation, surveillance and anti-insurgency tactics. The programme was conceptualised and implemented under the leadership of SP Janaki Sharmila.
Speaking at the launch event, minister Seethakka lauded the initiative as “a landmark step for women’s empowerment in the police force” and pledged to establish similar commando teams across other districts. “Shivangi will not only bolster our security apparatus but also inspire women officers statewide,” she said.
SP Janaki Sharmila described Shivangi as “the first unit of its kind in Telangana” and expressed confidence that it would yield “tangible results in counter insurgency and emergency response” in the coming months. Nirmal collector Abhilasha Abhinav and senior police officials were also present at the programme.
