NIMS Signs MoU For Dementia Care Support

HYDERABAD: The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Satoru Foundation to provide free psychosocial support services to elderly patients suffering from dementia and other neurodegenerative disorders.
The MoU was exchanged between Nims director Prof. Dr Rahul Devara and Satoru Foundation director Kanagala Sai Charan at the institute on Tuesday.
Under the partnership, around 15,000 elderly patients visiting the Neurology and Geriatrics outpatient departments at NIMS every year will receive counselling and psychosocial support at no additional cost.
As part of the initiative, trained volunteers from the Satoru Foundation will assist patients in the Neurology and Geriatrics wards and outpatient departments by providing counselling, memory care guidance and emotional support. They will also offer assistance and counselling to caregivers and family members. The services will be delivered under the supervision of NIMS doctors.
The collaboration also includes training programmes for caregivers of dementia patients. The sessions will focus on daily patient care, managing behavioural problems and reducing caregiver stress, enabling families to provide better care at home.
The Satoru Foundation will also help eligible senior citizens enrol under the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme.
In addition, NIMS and the Foundation will jointly organise training programmes for final‑year students of Nursing, Physiotherapy and Occupational Therapy on geriatric and dementia care. The training will cover elderly care, fall prevention and psychosocial support.
