NIMS Removes Brain Tumour Without Opening Skull
The surgical team used advanced 3D neuronavigation technology to precisely locate the tumour and protect critical blood vessels during the operation.

Hyderabad:A 50-year-old woman with a brain tumour underwent a scar-free, minimally invasive surgery at Nizam's Institute of Medical Sciences (Nims), Hyderabad, under the Aarogyasri scheme and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund, saving an estimated ₹10 lakh to ₹15 lakh in treatment costs.
Doctors removed the tumour using the Endoscopic Transorbital Approach, a technique that allows surgeons to reach the brain through a small incision hidden in the natural crease of the eyebrow. The procedure avoided scalp incisions and the removal of part of the skull, which are common in conventional brain surgeries.
The surgical team used advanced 3D neuronavigation technology to precisely locate the tumour and protect critical blood vessels during the operation. The tumour was removed using ultrasonic vibrations to selectively break and extract the tissues. This process is called Cavitron Ultrasonic Surgical Aspirator (CUSA).
According to Nims, the patient made a full neurological recovery, had no visible external scar and was discharged in stable condition.
Dr Yerragunta Thirumal, a member of the neurosurgical team, said the technique reduces trauma, avoids brain retraction and enables faster recovery compared to conventional open surgery.
