NIMS Celebrates 1,000 Robotic Surgeries in Less than 3 Years

Hyderabad: The Nizam’s Institute of Medical Sciences (NIMS) in Hyderabad has achieved a remarkable milestone by successfully completing 1,000 robotic-assisted surgeries in less than three years.
This landmark accomplishment represents a revolutionary advancement in public healthcare, making world-class robotic surgery accessible to patients who previously could not afford such cutting-edge treatment.
The milestone reflects NIMS’ unwavering commitment to excellence in patient care, innovation, and equitable healthcare delivery. By integrating advanced robotic technology into routine clinical practice, NIMS has significantly enhanced surgical precision, reduced postoperative pain, minimized blood loss, shortened hospital stays, and accelerated patient recovery.
Urology contributed 590 surgeries across various age groups, ranging from one year to more than 80 years old. Surgeries performed include highly complex procedures such as cancer surgeries like radical prostatectomy for prostate cancer, radical cystectomy for bladder cancer, complex robotic renal transplantation surgeries, urogynecological procedures, uro-reconstructive procedures like Boari flap, ureteric reimplantation, pyeloplasties, including paediatric pyeloplasty, and other advanced reconstructive surgeries.
Surgical Gastroenterology performed 248 robotic procedures, encompassing complex hepatobiliary, pancreatic, colorectal, intestinal, and upper gastrointestinal surgeries.
Surgical Oncology completed 162 robotic procedures, including precision surgeries for ovarian, uterine, colorectal, and other cancers, with an emphasis on organ preservation and nerve-sparing techniques. One of the most remarkable aspects of this achievement is its impact on public healthcare.
More than 90 per cent of these 1,000 robotic surgeries were performed completely free of cost under Government-supported healthcare schemes, including Aarogyasri and the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF).
By eliminating the financial barriers traditionally associated with robotic surgery, NIMS has demonstrated that advanced technology can be made accessible to every section of society. This achievement has firmly established NIMS as one of India’s premier public institutions for advanced robotic-assisted surgery.
Director of NIMS, Dr. Rahul Devraj, Senior Professor of Urology and Renal Transplantation, and Robotic Surgery Coordinator, congratulated the Departments of Urology, Surgical Gastroenterology, Surgical Oncology, Anaesthesiology, Nursing Services, Operation Theatre staff, and all supporting departments for their exceptional dedication, teamwork, and unwavering commitment in achieving this historic milestone.
He stated that this accomplishment reflects the collective expertise and relentless efforts of the multidisciplinary teams, establishing NIMS as a national centre of excellence for robotic-assisted minimally invasive surgery.
