Nil Winds Deepen Cold Wave Across Telangana
The Indian Meteorological Department - Hyderabad (IMD) expects the minimum temperature to remain in the 10-13°C range over the next few mornings, with cold conditions continuing especially during late night and early morning hours.

Hyderabad: New Year’s Day is likely to be cold, with dense morning fog and hazy skies, meteorologists said on Monday. Relief is likely only after the New Year, when minimum temperatures are expected to rise gradually.
Air quality levels across Telangana, particularly in Hyderabad and surrounding urban clusters, have slipped into the poor to very poor category, with particulate matter remaining suspended in the lower atmosphere. Morning hours are expected to see fog formation and reduced visibility, especially along highways and open stretches.
Over the past 24 hours, Komaram Bheem district recorded the lowest temperature in the state at 6.1°C at Tiriyani, according to Telangana Development and Planning Society (TGDPS). Northern and western districts, including Sangareddy, Adilabad, Medak, Vikarabad and Rangareddy, reported a minimum temperature of between 6°C and 9°C, placing large parts of Telangana under cold wave or alert conditions.
In Hyderabad, minimum temperatures dropped to 9.5°C at Rajendranagar, while areas such as Uppal, Charminar, Secunderabad and Begumpet recorded a minimum of 10-11°C.
The Indian Meteorological Department - Hyderabad (IMD) expects the minimum temperature to remain in the 10-13°C range over the next few mornings, with cold conditions continuing especially during late night and early morning hours.
Weather officials attributed the prolonged chill to stable atmospheric conditions and the absence of surface winds, which was preventing the dispersal of cold air and pollutants. “Nil wind conditions are allowing cold air to settle near the ground. This is also trapping pollutants, leading to hazy skies and deteriorating air quality,” an IMD scientist said.
Day temperatures are also expected to remain below normal in several districts, adding to the winter discomfort. No rainfall is forecast during this period, and skies are likely to remain largely clear, apart from haze and fog during early hours, according to the forecast on Monday.
Caution, particularly for children, the elderly and those with respiratory conditions has been advised, as the combination of cold nights and poor air quality can aggravate breathing problems. Commuters have also been advised to drive carefully during early morning hours due to fog-related visibility issues.
