NHRC Orders ₹50,000 Compensation in Nalgonda Custodial Torture Case

Commission cites police, medical lapses; seeks report from Nalgonda Collector

Hyderabad: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has directed the Telangana government to pay ₹50,000 as compensation to Sai Siddu in an alleged custodial torture case in Nalgonda district.

The case stems from a complaint alleging that Siddu, a tribal youth and auto driver, was picked up by Wadapally police in September 2025 and subjected to third-degree torture, resulting in injuries. While a police inquiry did not conclusively prove torture, the NHRC noted that medical evidence suggested otherwise.

The Commission flagged discrepancies between two medical reports--one from a hospital in Miryalaguda stating there were no visible injuries, and another from Nalgonda hospital recording swelling and inflammation in the victim’s feet. It observed that there was a “preponderance of probability” indicating custodial torture.

The NHRC also pointed to prima facie negligence by Sub-Inspector A. Srikanth Reddy and the duty medical officer who conducted the initial examination. Despite issuing a show-cause notice, the Commission said no response was received from state authorities.

Taking serious note, the NHRC confirmed compensation and directed the Nalgonda Collector to submit an inquiry report, warning of further action for non-compliance.
