New Initiative By Traffic Police Creates Awareness On Noise Pollution

This innovative method represents a departure from previous tactics, where police would crush seized modified silencers using road rollers.

WARANGAL: The innovative initiative launched by the traffic police in Warangal to create awareness on the rising noise pollution is capturing the public’s attention. With the support of senior officials, circle inspector (traffic) G. Seetha Reddy has ensured installation of distinctive ‘Noise Towers’ made from seized motorcycle silencers at key junctions to educate people about the noise pollution and the effects of modified motorcycle silencers, which greatly contribute to noise issues, public disturbances and possible health risks.

These Noise Towers, which strikingly resemble pointed guns, have been strategically installed at three significant junctions, including Ashoka theatre, Public Garden and KU Cross, drawing the attention of public and becoming a notable point of focus for both motorists and pedestrians in the tri-cities of Hanamkonda, Warangal and Kazipet.

This innovative method represents a departure from previous tactics, where police would crush seized modified silencers using road rollers. Now, the Hanamkonda traffic police have chosen a more visual and educational approach, aiming to initiate what they refer to as a ‘silent revolution’ in public awareness efforts.

To ensure the tower serves as an effective awareness tool even after sunset, radium stickers have been meticulously attached to its surface, making it highly visible during nighttime. The traffic police anticipate that this striking display would promote a significant change in the public behaviour and result in a noticeable decrease in noise levels throughout the city.

Moreover, a board has been placed at the locations of these Noise Towers, stating, ‘Do not create sound pollution and jeopardise the future of upcoming generations; we must support a quieter environment.’

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Seetha Reddy said that when parents buy motorcycles for their children to help them in their transportation, they may not realise that some of these kids are attaching modified silencers that increase noise, mimicking the sound of high-performance sports bikes.

“The price of modified silencers ranges from ₹3,000 to ₹25,000. Children are not only wasting their parents’ money but also contributing to noise pollution. To create awareness among the people, we have launched this initiative,” Seetha Reddy said.

“On numerous occasions, we have crushed the seized silencers after catching offenders. However, since there was no change in youths’ attitudes, we decided to repurpose those silencers to create this innovative structure. There are plans to progressively install Noise Towers at various key locations throughout the tri-cities of Hanamkonda, Warangal and Kazipet,” Seetha Reddy said.

A motorist named T. Sudhakar expressed his surprise at the silencer’s gun-point-like structure (Noise Towers) and told Deccan Chronicle that the new initiative is expected to significantly affect the people. It also serves to create awareness among parents about their children’s activities and how they may be squandering their money, he noted.
