Neglect Puts Paigah Tombs At Risk
Historians note that the tomb of Hussain Unnisa Begum is the resting place of Nizam V

HYDERABAD: Lack of proper supervision and maintenance is taking a heavy toll on graves at Paigah Tombs, Santhoshnagar, a notified heritage structure. Valuable coloured stones embedded in the grave of Hussain Un‑nisa Begum have already gone missing, while the last remaining green stones on the marble graves of Nawab Bashir‑ud‑Daula and Nawab Moin‑ud‑Daula are at risk of theft, raising serious concerns among heritage enthusiasts.
Historians note that the tomb of Hussain Unnisa Begum is the resting place of Nizam V, who married Kursheed Jah. The grave is adorned with precious stones forming floral patterns, known for replicating the tomb of Mumtaz Mahal inside the Taj Mahal.
“Due to the negligence of the Heritage Department and the Waqf Board, valuable religious heritage sites and their attached properties are getting damaged,” said Abdul Hafeez, a heritage enthusiast. He added that both agencies need to work together to maintain religious heritage structures and monuments.
Visitors said the marble graves display beautiful and detailed work, but lamented the absence of name boards identifying the nobles and their family members or explaining the site’s history. Responding to concerns over damage and security, a senior Heritage Department official said plans were underway to install CCTV cameras and provide additional security at the site, along with other heritage sites in the city.
