Minister denies ₹600-crore egg procurement scam

Hyderabad:Telangana social welfare minister Adluri Laxman Kumar on Wednesday denied allegations of a ₹600 crore scam in the procurement of eggs for welfare residential institutions, calling the claims politically motivated and based on a misunderstanding of recent government orders.

Referring to GO MS No. 17, he said the government has set up a project monitoring unit to ensure the supply of food items to welfare educational institutions through a uniform and transparent process, aimed at providing nutritious, hygienic meals to 6.49 lakh students in line with National Institute of Nutrition guidelines.

He clarified that there is no provision in GO 17 to give preference to large contractors, adding that the only requirement is that the eggs must be medium-sized, weighing 45-52 grams, and meet AGMARK standards. “This is not a job creation scheme. The aim is to protect the health of children, and anyone eligible can participate in the tender,” he said.

The government has also appointed a special inspection committee to ensure the implementation of hygiene and nutrition standards and provide quality food to every child studying in welfare educational institutions.
