Naveen Mittal Sets Jan. 2026 Deadline For YTPS Phase-5
On Friday, Mittal and Dr S. Harish, chairman and managing director of Telangana Generation Corporation Limited (TG-GENCO), inspected the YTPS site in Damaracherla, Nalgonda district.

Nalgonda: Principal secretary to the energy department Naveen Mittal has ordered that construction of the fifth unit at the Yadadri Thermal Power Station (YTPS) be completed by January 2026, with power generation to commence immediately thereafter.
On Friday, Mittal and Dr S. Harish, chairman and managing director of Telangana Generation Corporation Limited (TG-GENCO), inspected the YTPS site in Damaracherla, Nalgonda district. In a progress review with engineers from YTPS, BHEL, and TG-GENCO, Mittal stressed that rising electricity demand, from the upcoming kharif season through next summer, makes the timely commissioning of Unit 5 essential.
He urged all teams to prioritise Unit 5’s construction, accelerate development of the YTPS township, and maintain high quality standards. Officials were also tasked with securing lower-cost coal supplies and planting as many saplings as possible on station grounds to reinforce environmental stewardship.
Dr Harish instructed the finalisation of land acquisition for the connecting road from Damaracherla, the prompt removal of construction scrap, and deployment of additional BHEL engineers to meet deadlines. He also called for future-proof planning of on-site railway lines and for a 2027 strategy to diversify away from coal toward cleaner energy, alongside measures to improve coal-use efficiency.
YTPS chief engineer Ramesh Babu presented a detailed review of the project, underway since October 2017 with a revised ₹36,131 crore budget, while BHEL power director Teejender Gupta confirmed his commitment to complete Unit 5 on schedule. The visit concluded with Mittal surveying the power units, coal yard, cooling towers, and switchyard.
