Mulugu SP warns Maoists against threats

Mulugu SP vows action over Karrigutta bomb scare

Hyderabad: The Mulugu district police on Thursday warned that stern action would be taken against Maoist cadres for threatening tribal communities and attempting to restrict their movement in the forests near Karrigutta by claiming bombs had been planted. In a short video message, superintendent of police Dr P. Shabarish the Maoist Venkatapuram-Wazeedu area committee secretary Shantha had recently issued the statement.

Shabarish said, “This is illegal, and stern action will be taken. Tribals have long depended on the forest for their livelihood. Grazing cattle and collecting forest produce are natural activities for them. They will have to wander in the forest and it’s a natural process for them to enter the forest for cattle grazing and other works.”

He added that issuing threats and curbing their movement was not only unlawful but also an assault on their way of life. “The public should not be scared with such threats. Mulugu police are making elaborate security measures for their safety and will respond firmly,” he said.

“We are sanitising the entire area with bomb disposal squads and the combing operation is already on. The people must inform the police if they find any suspicious objects. We are always striving for the welfare of tribals and we are with you,” he added.

Condemning the Maoists for labelling innocent tribals as police informers, he called on senior Maoist cadres to join the mainstream and take advantage of the State government’s rehabilitation package for surrendered members.
